My Greensboro Story
Dave B., Charlotte, NC
I was born in Greensboro in 1966 and lived there through 1973. My 6 years were spent on Kery Dr. and 905 Winterlochen Dr. We were a basic 4-member family: father, mother, son & daughter. We lived through good and bad times in our early lives. We had many good friends, neighbors and relatives living in Greensboro then as they are now. We now reside in Charlotte NC., and have for the past 35 yrs. We're much older now but have simple memories of our time in the triad. My hobby of all time is trains. I started at age 3 on Christmas day, 1969, when I got from Santa my very 1st model train. Now I have a much bigger train set in my Charlotte home. As I got older I got more into trains by visiting the historic 1927 Southern Railway station and the Pomona freight yard. I even took trips on trains in later times. I now take area train rides when I get time off from my current job.
My favorite Greensboro hero is Lee Kinard, the WFMY News 2 former news anchor who was on "The Good Morning Show" for 50 yrs. He once emceed a children's fashion show at The Barn Dinner Theater on Stagecoach Trail. I and my cousin Carrie were a big part of the show. I wore a small black tuxedo while Carrie wore a long beautiful dress. Lee did such a fine job that day. I commend him for it.
To this day I visit my hometown from time to time to reminisce about the good old days, and visit the fine places in the city I grew up with, from Tex & Shirley's Restaurant to Wesley Long Comm. Hospital where I was born into the world on Dec. 16, 1966. My other places to visit are The Yum-Yum Ice Cream shop on Spring Garden St. at my mother's alma mater, UNCG; Stamey's Barbecue across from the Greensboro Coliseum where I used to attend the county fair and see shows; the Greensboro Electric Train shop to visit with Mr.Brock and see his model train collection; and the History Museum to view the exhibits. I also visit the W.Market St. Methodist Church where I once attended kindergarten and liked to run the elevator up and down. Mostly I visit the train station and railyard to watch train activity. Of course friends and family in Greensboro are still a vital part of my hometown's culture. I'm grown up now but I'll always be known as "Greensboro's Golden Boy of the Rails". Thank you for listening to my fine story. "Happy Birthday #200 Greensboro!" You'll always be Home Sweet Home to me! May my memory in the triad last a lifetime! "All Aboard!"
My Greensboro Hero
Joe R., Greensboro, NC
Before joining the Navy and moving my family to my wife's native home of Prescott, AZ, I lived my entire life in Greensboro. In fact, at least seven generations of my father's family have lived in Greensboro. Everywhere I have been in this country and around the world I am proud to tell everyone that I meet, that I am from Greensboro, NC.
And, no matter where I live, whether it be Norfolk, Va or San Diego,CA, I always call Greensboro home. I guess that is why my youngest son's name is "Nathanael Greene Rumley". That's right! I named my son after my hometown and its greatest hero!

I have been in Greensboro my whole life. I have seen Starmount go from farms and only a few homes to a thriving neighborhood. Holden Road was two lanes and dirt. I watched Friendly Center being built. So many changes and so much growth but it is still the best place in the USA to live. I remember the sit in downtown and the Klan shootings-watching the action from the top of the building where I worked. We are fortunate to live in such a wonderful place. There is nowhere else I would rather be than right here. Happy Birthday Greensboro!!

When we moved to Greensboro about 10 years ago, downtown resembled a ghost town once the office workers left for the day. The weekends were even worse: absolutely nothing went on. The place was dead.
Now, thanks to the dedicated efforts of city government, private investors, entrepreneurs and local merchants, the downtown area is completely revitalized! There are shops, restaurants, even a thriving nightlife with a variety of clubs to suit everyone's tastes.
Greensboro is forging its own path into the future and is acquiring a distinctive personality. We enjoy it here and look forward to living here for many years. Happy Birthday, Greensboro!

I have lived in Greensboro for almost 12 years now. I love it here. There is truly something for everyone and, as they say, close to the beach and the mountains! It's very exciting to be living in Greensboro during the time of the bicentennial. Happy Birthday, Greensboro!!
