Greensboro Bicentennial Commemorative Project: The Downtown Greenway
Seeking to leave a long-lasting gift for the citizens of Greensboro, the Greensboro Bicentennial Commission has adopted development of the city's Greenway as its signature commemorative project. The Greenway, which will be a 4.2 mile walking and biking trail around the city, will promote fitness, connectedness and well-being for all our residents and visitors in an aesthetically pleasing environment.
Developing the Greenway to surround the downtown and link to Greensboro's existing parks and trails system is part of Greensboro's Center City Master Plan, proposed in the fall of 2001 by the Cooper Carry Center for Connective Architecture. Action Greensboro in cooperation with Cooper Carry and the City of Greensboro are working on development for the Greenway. The Bicentennial Commission's commemoration committee is now working with the Greenway Steering Committee to secure funding for the Greenway, further guide its development, and use it as a way to showcase the city's history and culture. A groundbreaking is planned for Spring 2008 during the Bicentennial Celebration.
